目的と概要
デザイン＆ミュージアム・リンクは、わが国に総合的なデザイン・ミュージアムの設立を実現させるために、その「環境整備」に寄与することも、活動目標のひとつにしています。その第一歩として、将来の公的なミュージアム・コレクション形成の一助となる「DDB」［デザイン・ドネーション・バンク］制度を発足させました。
これは、デザインを「文化資源」と位置づけ、散逸・消滅の危険が認められる貴重な「もの」、すなわち「デザイン文化財」に関する「情報」をデータベース化する活動です。しかし、単なる作品・製品、関連資料の調査・整理、およびデータベース構築、あるいは私的なコレクションの形成ではありません。それらの所在と状態を詳細に把握し、現所有者・保管先の協力を得ながら、「デザイン文化財」を可能な限りオリジナルな状態で残し、「もの」と「情報」が一体化した保存、ひいては公的な活用を主眼としています。というのも日本の現状は、既存のミュージアムでは、デザイン領域の作品や資料の網羅的、系統的、発展的な収蔵・コレクション管理が不十分であり、企業やコレクターについても、文化資源としての製品の保管・継承が意識的、恒常的、建設的に行われていないからです。
とはいえ、さし当たっては、資源の現所有者・保管先の固有スペースを最大限に活かした活動を持続し、わたしたちが責任を持って「情報」をお預かりすることで、いわばヴァーチャルなストレージを築き、やがては、そのネットワークを国内外に拡大・充実させていきます。将来的には、わたしたちが手がけた個々のデザイン文化財、データベースとネットワークが、現実のデザイン・ミュージアムに集約・還元されることはいうまでもありません。
「DDB」の成果は、国内外の専門家による研究、展示、出版、普及、その他のミュージアム活動の糧になりますが、修復など、とりわけデザイン作品・製品、関連資料の物理的な保存に関する知識の蓄積、取り扱いノウハウの確立については、わたしたちが主体的に取り組んでいきます。また、特に散逸・消滅の危険度が高い「デザイン文化財」の所在が確認された場合、デザイン＆ミュージアム・リンクは「DDB-ERチーム」［デザイン文化財のレスキュー隊］を現地へ派遣し、その救助に努めます。

システムの実際
1. 資源の現所有者・保管先が、デザイン＆ミュージアム・リンクの「DDBドナー」登録を行う。
2. 資源に関する基本データ［作家・デザイナー名、作品・製品名、制作・製造年、素材・技法、制作者・メーカー名、寸法、所有・保管するに至った経緯ほか、わかる範囲で］、記録［画像・映像・音源など］、現状［保存状態］に関するコメント、ドナー自身の氏名や住所などを、デザイン＆ミュージアム・リンクへ報告する。
3. 上記の「情報」が、デザイン＆ミュージアム・リンクの「DDBデータベース」に加えられる。
4. 以降、継続的に、デザイン＆ミュージアム・リンクのメンバーやスタッフによる現物・現地調査、ドナーとの面談・協議が行われる。

付記
「DDB」の対象となる「デザイン文化財」は、プロダクト・デザインを中心に、古今東西のデザイン作品・製品［一次資料］、関連・文献資料［二次資料］です。
ドナーからご提供いただいた情報のうち、資源に関するものは、「デザイン文化財」の保存という観点から「公共性が高い」と考えられますので、基本的にはデータ管理者であるデザイン＆ミュージアム・リンクの判断で、わたしたちや他の専門家による研究、展示、出版、普及、その他のミュージアム活動に供され、公開されることをご了承ください。もちろん、データ公開に当たっては、必ずドナーにご相談・ご報告させていただきます。これに対して、ドナーの個人情報については、外部に対して守秘されます。
第三者から資源・情報の活用［研究、展示、出版、普及などの目的による］が打診された場合、その交渉・調整などは、ドナーの権利を保護しながら、デザイン＆ミュージアム・リンクのメンバーが責任を持って行います。
「DDBコレクション」 と 「D&MLコレクション」の棲み分け、関連については、以下のように整理しています。
A. D&MLコレクション
デザイン＆ミュージアム・リンクが所有・管理する資源。こちらへの「寄贈」を受けた場合、作品・製品、関連資料は、D&MLの所有となり、D&MLの4つの収蔵庫［東京・横浜・鎌倉・宇都宮のいずれか］で保管されます。また、資源の取り扱い［研究・展示・出版・普及・修復・貸出など］は、完全にD&MLの判断に委ねられます。
B. DDBコレクション
ドナーが所有・管理する資源。こちらへの「登録」を受けた場合、「もの」の所有権はドナーが有し、その情報管理・研究はD&ML
に委ねられます。「情報」は両者で共有され、資源の取り扱いについても、両者の協議によります。
C. DDB-D&MLコレクション
ドナーが所有、D&MLが管理する資源。こちらへの「登録」を受けた場合、「もの」の所有権はドナーが有しますが、資源はD&MLの収蔵庫で保管されます。情報管理・研究、「情報」の共有、資源の取り扱いについては、上記の
B. [DDBコレクション] と同じです。

Practical Work Process of DDB
1. Present owner of "design heritage"
[objects and collections] register for themsevles as our "DDB
Donor."
2. The donors inform us fundamental data [e.g.,
name of artist/designer, title of work or name of product, year
of design/production, manufacturer, dimensions, provenance and etc.,
as far as the donors can prepare], other information [still/moving
images, sound sources, related materials and documents, if there
are any] and comments on the present conditions, as wells as their
names and contact addresses.
3. Our registrar lists up the collected information
and materials in our "DDB Database."
4. Our members and staffs work on continuous research
of the registered "design heritage" including interviews
and meetings with the donors.

NOTES
"Design heritage" covered by DDB is, design works [mainly
product design] of various districts and periods, related materials
and documents.
In terms of preserving "design heritage," information
concerning objects and collections is considered as public property.
Therefore, it would be opened to public as well as shared among
members and staffs of D&ML, other professionals and museums
for research, exhibition, publication, education and other public
activities. Of course, we promise the donors to consult with them
about information disclosure on such occasions. On the other hand,
privacy of the donors is carefully protected by us.
In case other institutions and individuals requests us to offer
them information as well as objects and collections for the purpose
of research, exhibition, publication, education and other public
activities, we will be responsible to negotiate and discuss with
them on behalf of the donors.
We are handling three different types of donations depending on
the donors' will and relationships with us.
A. D&ML Collection
All works, products and related materials are completely
owned by D&ML. In case the donors offer their "design heritage"
to this collection, objects will be kept in our four storages [Tokyo
/ Yokohama / Kamakura / Utsunomiya] as our possessions. Handling
of objects [for research, exhibition, publication, education, restoration,
loan and other public activities] is entirely entrusted to us.
B. DDB Collection
"Design heritage" is owned by the donors. In
case the donors register to this collection, objects will be kept
for themselves as their possessions. D&ML is responsible for
registration and research, and information is shared between us
and the donors. Handling of objects is also discussed between the
two.
C. DDB-D&ML Collection
"Design heritage" is owned by the donors and
kept by D&ML. In case the donors register to this collection,
objects will be moved to our storages as their possessions . Responsibility
of registration and research, sharing of information and handling
of objects are as same as above, case B. [DDB Collection].
